Mitel Networks, including Mitel phone systems, was formed after the acquisition of the communications arm of Mitel Corporation by co-founder Terry Mathews. Interestingly, Terry Mathews also bought the name Mitel. Originally, Mitel was founded in 1973 by Terence Mathews and was an established name in manufacture of semiconductors. Besides being the first to develop a private line PBX, it also had clientele in over 90 countries. But in 2001 the telephone system arm became independent of the parent body. Today about 20 million customers in over 90 countries use Mitel phone systems and communications solutions.
